Optical Flow ‹posted by Woo, March 7th, 2008›

Karman vortex street
(Von Karman vortex street off the Chilean coast near the Juan Fernandez Islands)

It would be fantastic if I could simulate this kind of complex fluid dynamics phenomena
interacting with video input signal.

Images taken visualizing fluidic motions looks very dynamic although it’s a still shot.

A genius computer scientist Jos Stam developed
a super-fast fluid dynamics simulation algorithm
when he was working for Alias wavefront.

And this algorithm is the main engine for Maya fluids.

With his algorithm and the aids from JMF video capture,
I could build an “Optical Flow” engine written in JAVA.

This engine simulates real-time fluid dynamics taking differential video input signals as
mass sources of dye solution. Below is the test video.
